| About | Ralph Marcus "Bruz" Cross, 73, of Charlevoix, died Saturday, Oct. 27 in Charlevoix. He was born July 22, 1934, in South Haven, the son of Ralph E. and Alice (Beadle) Cross. He graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1952. Bruz was a commercial fisherman his entire life and had fished all over the Great Lakes. One achievement he was proud of was the 50-foot steel tugboat the "Colleen Sue," he built with the help of his family. He also refitted the tugboat, the "Lucille" to utilize trap nets when gill nets were phased out. Bruz enjoyed being a fireman, and was a charter member of the Charlevoix Township Fire Department. In fact, he was in the community with the fire department promoting fire safety to children when he died. He has served as the fire chief and the help of his family. Ralph is survived by his children, Judy Speigl of Charlevoix, Thomas Cross of Dillingham. Alaska, Gary Cross, Larry (Cathy) Cross all of Charlevoix, Colleen (Butch) Smith of Allegan; grandchildren, Tracy Gilland, Tammy Speigl, Ben and Tim Cross, Brad and Sarah Smith; brother, Charles "Billy" (Donna) Cross of Alpena; his valentine, Swanee Alden of Charlevoix, and her children, Chris, Darby and Jeff; former wife, Shirley (Gallagher) Cross of Charlevoix. A funeral took place on Thursday, Nov. 1 at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix. Pastor Dan Gilmore of the Charlevoix Church of the Nazarene officiated. Burial will take place in Brookside Cemetery in Charlevoix. Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlevoix Township Fire Department. |
