| About | Donald E. Black, 64 of Boyne City, died December 22, 2012 at the Charlevoix Area Hospital in Charlevoix, MI. Donald was born on December 18, 1948 in Pontiac, MI, the son of Harold and Juanita (Davis) Black and was raised in Quanicassee, MI. At a young age, his family moved to Charlevoix, and he graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1967. Following high school, Donald moved to Boston, MA and there attended a Technical School, before returning to Northern Michigan a few years later and going to work at Control Engineering in Pellston. On May 12, 1973, Donald married Linda Burns in Charlevoix. Together they made their home in Petoskey and Donald worked at Will-Flow in Charlevoix. He later went to work for Great Lakes Energy in Boyne City as a Mapping Technician and has been there for the last 26 years, of which, he and Linda lived in Boyne City for the last 7. Donald was a true grill master. He was known for his cooking and smoking meats. He cooked the brats for Northmen football games for many years and was an active member of the Jaycees. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and spending time at his cabin in the Upper Peninsula, where he enjoyed every minute of the time and energy he spent making it what he wanted. He was a current board member of the Charlevoix Rod and Gun Club. Donald is survived by his wife of 39 years, Linda; his father, Harold Black; 2 children, Jennifer Lynn (Troy, Sr.) Sumbera of Wolverine and Jason Eugene (Chana) Black of Rockford, MI; 5 grandchildren, Troy Sumbera, Jr., Travis Sumbera, Todd Sumbera, Christopher Black, and Trent Black; 3 sisters, Debbie (Bill) Bellinger, Claudia (Guy) Lewinski, and Tina Powers; and 5 nieces and nephews, Jeff Pettit, David Pettit, Billy Bellinger, Jessica Martin, and Erika Lewinski. Donald was preceded in death by his mother; a sister, Joan Pettit; a brother-in-law, Ed Powers; and by a nephew, Brandon Powers. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 26th at 1:00pm at the Stone Funeral Home with Rev Stephen Beigle officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11:00am until the time of service. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. |
