About | ouis Bartlett "Bud" Kohler, 77, of Charlevoix, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at his home. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Charlevoix. The Rev. James K. Gardiner will officiate, and burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Charlevoix. Bud was born April 3, 1924, in Grand Rapids, the son of Carl and Benona (Bartlett) Kohler. He grew up in Charlevoix and graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1941. He graduated from Alma College, completed his V-12 Marine Corps Officer Training at Oberlin and did his post-graduate studies at Michigan State University. Bud served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1952, finishing his active duty as a 1st Lieutenant. He was decorated with the Bronze Star and Korean Service Medal for serving during the Korean War-Chosin Reservoir. On June 24, 1950, Bud married Frances Rollins in Detroit, Mich. He and Fran made their home in Detroit, East Lansing and Saginaw, summering in Charlevoix throughout the years. He retired as employment director after 30 years with Michigan Bell, and in 1986, made their home in Charlevoix. Bud was a member of "Baker Bandits," the USMC Korean War Veterans-Baker Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He served with the Marine Corps League, an organization active with the Toys for Tots Program. He belonged to the Lake Charlevoix Association-Lake Charlevoix Watershed Project and was committed to WATCH (Water-Air Team Charlevoix) and Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council. Bud was a member of the Charlevoix Historical Society, Charlevoix Rod and Gun Club, Ruffed Grouse Society and Friends of Camp Daggett. He was a Lions Club member, serving as president of the Saginaw Township Chapter from 1977-78, and was an instructor for the AARP 55/Alive Mature Driving Program. Bud was involved in many Charlevoix projects, especially the realization of the Charlevoix Community Pool, Keep Charlevoix Beautiful's "Operation Petunia," and Substance Abuse Prevention and Education. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Charlevoix. Survivors include his wife, Frances; son, Thomas C. (Judith) Kohler, of Boston, Mass.; daughter, Judy (Kim) Krzeszewski, of Reese, Mich.; daughter, Janet (Dan) Dueweke, of Fairfax, Va.; son, William F. Kohler, of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, John and David Kohler, Foster Findlay and Christy (Rick) Klass, Carey, Sarah and Anne Dueweke, Malori and Jered Klass. He was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Bob Lieberman, of Charlevoix. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix, where a scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlevoix Alano Club, or to any of the above mentioned environmental organizations that were so important to Bud during his lifetime. |
