About Dorothy S. Stoel, 97, of Charlevoix, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.

Funeral was 1 p.m.. Monday; Feb. 16. at the Barnard United Methodist Church, with Pastor Rap Posnik officiating. Visitation was Sunday at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix. The burial will take place in the spring at Barnard Cemetery.

Dorothy was born Dec. 12, 1911, in Charlevoix to Clyde and Vera (Vance) Smith.

She graduated Valedictorian from Charlevoix High School in 1929. and from the County Normal School in 1930. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Central Michigan University in I960.
From 1930 to 1933, Dorothy taught in rural schools at the Burns School in Antrim County and the Phelps School in Charlevoix County.
She taught at the (now) Bergmann Center for two years before teaching at the ElIsworth Community School beginning in 1957, retiring in 1975.

Dorothy was a member of the Barnard United Methodist Church where she was a long time youth group leader and Sunday School teacher and a member of the Barnard United Methodist Women. She also belonged to the Barnard Grange, Amnesty International, and the Little Traverse League for Peace and Freedom.

On Nov. 28, 1935, she married Arthur Stoel in Charlevoix. Arthur preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 1954.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Paul) Poster of Alden, Betty (Doug) Noverr of East Lansing, Shirley (John) VanDam of Branson: grandchildren, Stewart (Tracy) Foster of Saint Vincent, Belgium. Mary (Dan) Schwietering of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jim (Jen) VanDam of Milford, Jill (Sam) Settineri of Marshall, Jodi (Chuck) Shortridge of Bronson; great-grandchildren, Nick, Anna, and Ellie Schwietering; Max and Carl Foster; Jack and John David VanDam; Lucas, Eric. and Claire Settineri; Gracie. Veronica, Lauren. and Clayton Shortridge: brother Clayton (Kay) Smith of Charlevoix; sisters, Mary Warner, and Marjorie Warner both of Charlevoix; sister-in-law Mary Ann Smith of Petoskey; aunt to numerous wonderful nieces and nephews.

Dorothy's brother Carlton, and sister, Helen Smith preceded her in death.
