About | Carlyle A. Roberts Obituary Carlyle A. Roberts, 87, of Northport, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2022 at home with his loving family at his side. Carl was born March 28, 1935 in Lake City, the son of Carlyle and Bertha (Hicks) Roberts. On Aug. 23, 1958 at the Northport Methodist Episcopal Church, he married Martha L. Baumberger, who preceded him in death on Jan. 25, 2016. After starting out life in Lake City, Carl lived for a time in Reed City with his mother and seven brothers and sisters, a very close-knit family. They later moved to a small farm in Charlevoix. Carl graduated from Charlevoix High School, attended Central Michigan University for two years, then completed a teaching degree at Michigan State. After marrying, he and Martha moved to Clio, then Otisville, where Carl taught school. They returned to Martha's hometown of Northport in 1966 to raise their four daughters to be closer to family and lived there ever since. He and Martha were noted for their hospitality and they enjoyed welcoming relatives and friends into their home, where the coffee pot was always on. His career at Northport Public Schools included junior high math, science and social studies instruction. He taught driver education in the summers to hundreds of Northport area teens, always reminding them to keep their hands at ten and two, and to come to a complete stop at stop signs. Ever the sports fan, he coached JV teams at Northport schools and in the early years rallied kids at recess in playground football games. Supporting his daughters' involvement in softball, volleyball, basketball and track was always a joy. He loved cheering for the underdogs at high school football games. Carl's lifelong interest in farming blossomed into home gardening and yard work and he spent countless hours in his large garden growing produce for the family table, for sharing with friends and neighbors, and even supplying a roadside stand tended by his young daughters. Never a quitter, Carl also impressed that characteristic on to his children, who were urged to maintain a paper route much longer than they would have liked. Another noted trait was his love of conversation with anyone, friend or stranger. Anyone who ever had the pleasure of conversing with Carl was undoubtedly peppered with many questions. Carl is survived by his three daughters, Gail Roberts (Tim Webb), Colleen Roberts (Dennis Woodward), Carla Roberts (Jim Rantala); a sister, Mary (James) Schrandt; sisters-in-law, Sue (Richard) Hanson and Ila Roberts; grandchildren, Jabe (Breann) Dalzell; Carl (Kalinda), John, Thomas (fiancée Mary Wachuta), Daniel, and Mary Webb; Catherine Daisy, Robin, and Miles Woodward; great-grandchildren, Joseph, Molly and Alyssa Webb; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Martha; his parents, Carlyle Roberts, Sr. and Bertha Roberts; a daughter, Marcy K. Roberts; and his siblings, Marjorie (Joseph) Himmel, Phyllis Roberts, Arlyle (William) Koehler, Jack Roberts, James (Ila) Roberts and Joan (Fred) Jolliffe. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 15 at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. The memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 16 at the Trinity Church of the United Church of Christ in Northport. Masks are required and will be provided if needed.
