About Terry Dean Pop, 76, of Custer, formerly of Charlevoix, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at the American House in Charlevoix with his loving family at his side. He was born on October 13, 1948, in Charlevoix, the son of Frank Jr. and Louise (Van De Car) Pop.

Terry graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1966, and a few years later enlisted in the United States Army. He served during the Vietnam War from June 9, 1970, to March 30, 1972, earning the rank of SP5. Terry was a combat engineer working as a blade grader operator building roads and bridges in Vietnam. He won several awards and recognitions, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, one Overseas Bar, Sharpshooter badge (M-16), and an Expert Sharpshooter badge (M-14).

He returned to Northern Michigan following his discharge and lived in East Jordan for several years before moving to Grand Rapids in 1981. He worked as a machine repairman at Steelcase for 21 years, ultimately retiring in 2002. He then moved to a secluded home in Custer where he enjoyed the calming waters of a creek in the backyard and all the wildlife surrounding. Terry loved deer hunting, fishing for muskie and pike, and was a proud member of the NRA. Terry held a strong faith in Jesus as his Lord and Savior, and he enjoyed his family and his sweet dogs.

On June 29, 1974, Terry married the love of his life, Janice (Gibbard) Pop, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Trina (Steve) Ray of Colorado, Diana Dempsey (Jim Towne) of Alanson, Tamra (Ken) Rhoads of Colorado, and Frank Pop of Lowell; his brother, Larry Pop; five grandsons, Jackson, Marcus, Brady, Peyton, and Jagger; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jim Holmes; and his sister, Elgie Rankin.
