About | LIEBERMAN Martha (Jane) Obituary 2000 Source: Petoskey News-Review; Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan Martha (Jane) LIEBERMAN, 71 Martha (Jane) LIEBERMAN, 71, of Charlevoix, died May 8, 2000, at home surrounded by her family. Because of ongoing renovations at the First Congregational Church, the memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 11, at the United Methodist Church in Charlevoix. The Rev. Philip G. Schairbaum will officiate, with interment at Brookside Cemetery, Charlevoix. Jane was born in Charlevoix on Feb. 12, 1929, to Carl F. and Benona (BARTLETT) KOHLER. A life-long resident of Charlevoix, Jane graduated from Charlevoix High School and attended Alma College, where she was a Highland Lassie. On Sept. 17, 1949, she married Robert G. LIEBERMAN in Charlevoix, where they owned and operated Lieberman’s Department Store for 30 years. Jane served as president of the Charlevoix School Board from 1972-74, and as the chairwoman of the Republican Party in the 1960s. She was a fourth generation member and deaconess of the First Congregational Church of Charlevoix. Jane was a talented seamstress who created gowns worn at Presidential inaugurations and had her own Its a Jano clothing line. She was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed boating, church activities and community service. Jane is survived by daughters, Kristin J. and her husband, Thomas J. SCHAPERKOTTER, of Charlevoix, and Kathryn A. Kit ASKIN of Lansing; sons, Kraag C. LIEBERMAN and his wife, Cyndie, of Charlevoix, Kirk R. LIEBERMAN and his wife, Betsy, of Petoskey, and Karl G. LIEBERMAN of San Diego, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and a brother, Louis B. “Bud” KOHLER and his wife, Frances TANNY of Charlevoix. Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and by a daughter, Karen. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church Building Fund. Envelopes for contributions will be available at the United Methodist Church in Charlevoix, where visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 10. Arrangements are being handled by Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix. |
