| Favorite School Memory | A Joe Norris joke that blew up in his face. One afternoon, “Uncle Joe” began class (a 3-hour class) acting tired and lethargic. It was all a “put on,” to set the stage for a joke that he was going to tell the class. He wrote a few things on the board, paused, and said: “Men, I apologize - I just can’t think. I was up all night, working on my new hamway.” (He said this to “set us up” for the punch line. You see, one of us was supposed to raise our hand and, wide-eyed and innocent, say: “Golly gee Uncle Joe, what’s a hamway?” and then he’d respond: “Oh, about three or four pounds!” Get it? “hamway . . . ham weigh”) Well, instead of things unfolding as Uncle Joe had hoped, immediately after Uncle Joe said: “Men, I apologize - I just can’t think. I was up all night, working on my new hamway,” one of our classmates interjected: “Oh yeah - I’ve got one of those.” Somewhat irritated, but with a slight smile on his face, Uncle Joe said: “No, son - you don’t.” Immediately, the same student said: “Yeah - yeah, I’ve got one of those.” More visibly irritated, and with no smile his face, Uncle Joe said, rather firmly: “No, son - you don’t.” And once again, the same student insisted: “Yeah, I do - I’ve GOT one.” And just like someone dropping a lit match in an open container of gasoline, Uncle Joe exploded: “G*d D*mmit son, you can’t POSSIBLY have one, because there’s no such thing, G*d D*mmit! I said: ‘I was up all night, working on my new hamway,’ and one of you was supposed to say: ‘What’s a hamway?’ and then I was gonna say: ‘Oh, about three or four pounds!’ and G*d D*mmit, son - you ruined my joke!” Whenever I think of Uncle joe “losing it” like that, I start laughing, and I laugh for several minutes.
