About Me | My father is a story-teller -- not in that he tells fantastical lies, but that when he tells you a story about his life, you feel like you were there experiencing it with him. I'll never forget his "Danny" stories (a childhood friend with marginal common sense), school stories (shenanigans my father and his goofball friends caused in their small-town high school) and an occasional military tale (ever hear of a "full-moon salute?" Ask my Dad...he'll be happy to explain). I take so much pleasure in hearing the stories he shared with me in my childhood being retold. They are familiar and are always told the same way, but it doesn't make them any less interesting, entertaining, or captivating. More than anything, these stories are a window into my father's personality. Humor is a strong factor in just about every story he tells. You don't have to be around the man long before you get a good belly-laugh from him (a trait I have DEFINITELY inherited). People who laugh often can be labeled as nervous, or not serious, or immature. However, if you talk to him long enough, listen to his stories and consider why these events he shares have such a lasting impact on him, you'll see that he is simply a happy person. He embraces the fun, joy, and humor in situations and doesn't dwell on the bad. I strive to take after my father in this regard. I don't mean to walk through life wearing proverbial "rose-colored glasses," or ignore the bad, the depressing, the hurtful moments in life. I just don't dwell on those moments. I will do what I can to bring the situation around to something positive, and if I can't, that's okay....I tried. I am more inclined to remember being snowed in at a friend's house and finding that we share a love of Star Trek (don't hate on geeks...we're people, too); to share an account of my college roommate and I trying "rag-curls" and ending up looking like little orphan Annie's (trying to brush them out only gave us afros); or playing poker with a group of co-workers, then opting to go play on a local playground at 3:00am (swings are SO much more fun in the middle of the night). I am proud to say that I have become a story-teller, too, sharing tidbits about me and experiences I've had in my life -- no surprise, they tend to be humorous and hopeful, just like Dad's. I think that sharing yourself with others is such a wonderful thing. It grows relationships, creates connections and broadens opinions. I can only hope that in sharing stories about me, I can uplift, teach, and encourage others to do the same...and...(read more) |
