Chandler High School Alumnus and Local Physician Featured on New Medical Website
(Phoenix AZ, Feb. 10, 2012) – A Chandler High School alumnus and local physician Javier Cardenas, MD, has been selected to be featured on a new medical website, Barrow50.org.
Dr. Cardenas is a neurologist and brain injury expert at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. He is the driving force behind the nation’s first mandated concussion education program for student athletes. A former special education teacher, Dr. Cardenas became a physician to help bridge the gap between education and medicine. He is a 1994 graduate of Chandler High School.
“As a former special education teacher, I experienced teaching children with various disabilities and ultimately decided that medicine is how I can most affect change.”
Dr. Cardenas and Barrow, in collaboration with the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Arizona Cardinals and ASU, developed Barrow Brainbook in August to educate student athletes about the risks of concussion. The first of its kind in the nation, the program is expected to change the face of high school sports.
“Before Barrow Brainbook was developed, concussion education was available for coaches and athletic trainers however nothing was directed at the student athlete who is the most important individual when it comes to concussion,” says Dr. Cardenas. “More than 75,000 student athletes in Arizona have completed Barrow Brainbook and it’s the model for the nation.”
St. Joseph’s Barrow Neurological Institute is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012. The new interactive website is part of Barrow’s commemorative activities this year. Dr. Cardenas is one of only 50 special patients and doctors chosen to be interviewed for the website. Patients travel from all over the United States and the world for the special neurological expertise available at Barrow.
