About Washington State Veterans Cemetery, Medical lake, WA

Val Jay Cornwell, 60, of Priest River, Idaho, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 21st 2014 at his home of 22 years. Jay was born in Pico Rivera, California on November 7th 1953, to Lloyd and Evelyn Cornwell. He grew up in Downieville, California where he had many fond memories of his family's lodge and hunting and fishing. He graduated from Casa Roble High School in 1972 and was drafted into the Navy. He spent 3 years in the military as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic in Miramar, California. He married Jill Horton on April 30th 1977 in Sacramento, California. They had their first child, Jayson Cornwell in Sacramento, California in 1984. Jay, Jill, and Jayson moved to Priest River, Idaho in 1992 and they purchased 13 acres of God's country. In 1995 Jay and Jill had their second and final child, Jordon Cornwell. In 1999 Jay started the Priest River Quick Lube for which he ran until 2006. He sold the Quick Lube and purchased his dream fishing boat and took his family on a vacation to Europe. He also very much enjoyed firearms, so much, that he would help out at gun shows all over the North West. Jay loved being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends; he always thought making time for family was extremely important. He was always laughing, he enjoyed making people smile. Some of his favorite memories were taking people out on his boat. He was an avid fisherman, but he just enjoyed being out on the water. He loved to cook, and always trying something new. He was very passionate about current government events. He was also always willing to help anyone that needed it. He was always volunteering to help those who were not as privileged, lending knowledge, equipment, or time. Jay was preceded in death by both of his parents and his sister Coralie Cornwell. He is survived by his wife, Jill; son Jayson; daughter Jordon; brother, Wade; as well as his granddaughters Jaylie, Aurora, and Elionna; and several extended family members. A memorial service to honor Jay's life will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, Washington on February 7th 2014 at 3pm. A reception will be held at the Edgemere Grange after at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

My husband Doug Kile and I married soon after Doug and Jay graduated. We spent a lot of time with Jay both before his time in the military and afterwards. He was fun-loving and a great friend. Linda Kile
