About | English Tacher Age 85 of Stillwater Formerly of Sacramento, CA Passed away March 2, 2022. Gail was born in St. Paul on April 14, 1936, to Helen Hawthorne Hartung and Thomas Grant Hartung. She graduated from Derham Hall High School in 1954 and earned her undergraduate degree from Creighton University, graduating in 1958. Graduate work followed at the University of Minnesota and American University in Sacramento. Gail taught high school in the Sacramento area for 30 years. She returned to the Midwest in 2015 after experiencing the early stages of dementia, eventually taking up residence in Stillwater. Her favorite place was a family cabin near Cumberland, Wisconsin. For many, many years beginning in 1965 she drove to Wisconsin from California to spend time swimming and reading on a nine-acre lake that was cool, deep, and quiet. She loved singing, belonging to the Sacramento chapter of the Sweet Adelines in the 1970s and 1980s. Intensely independent, she lived in strident opposition to the mantra that haunts the lives of many women: "Heaven help you if you don't say what you don't think." She is survived by her brother David (Julie) of Stillwater; nephew Seth (Jamie) of Seattle; and niece Sarah (Johnny) of Portland, OR. Special thanks to the staff of Oak Park Senior Living in Stillwater; Matthew Logan, M.D., and the staff of Bluestone Medical Group; the staff of Brighton Hospice. Her special friend and companion Cheri Croft stood with Gail for five years of progressive decline. The Reverend Austin Barnes of St. Michael's parish in Stillwater provided extraordinary spiritual support. No services will be held. A gift to an animal shelter will be much appreciated, especially by the creatures who would love to have a friend like Gail. |
