About | Ellen Shapiro died at Community Hospital from injuries in a single car accident on Tuesday evening, Jan. 4th 2005. She was born in Los Angeles and spent her childhood there and in Sarasota, FL. Her family moved to Carmel in 1973, and Ellen graduated from Carmel High in 1982. She then attended MPC and UOP, and graduated from San Francisco State with a BA in Psychology in 1987 after making the Dean’s List with a 3.9 GPA in her Major. Thereafter, she spent a year in La Jolla working for Nordstrom’s in sales and marketing. Ellen was always interested in entering the health field, so she moved to Boston where she was employed by John Hancock Insurance as a Benefits Consultant, and then Brigham and Women’s Hospital as a Secretary to the Executive Staff. Ellen returned to the Monterey Peninsula in 1992 and has been employed ever since as the Administrative Secretary at the Outpatient Immunology Services Section (OPIS) at Community Hospital for the past 12 years. Ellen was a sensitive, warm and outgoing person who would go out of her way to help someone, and she volunteered for many causes including the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter, CASAS, and the Hospice. Ellen’s concern and compassion for others knew no boundaries. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends, co-workers, doctors, and especially her patients at OPIS. She is survived by her parents, Mary Lou and Ed Shapiro of Carmel Valley, and her loving brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Mayaria Shapiro, and her nieces Mikala, Amanda, Madison, and nephew Matthew, also of Carmel Valley. After surviving two major surgeries for a brain tumor at Stanford in 1993, Ellen always strove to set high goals for herself to improve her health and mental capacity, and she continued her education by taking numerous classes and seminars. After being advised by her Doctors and family not to attempt it, she successfully ran the Big Sur Marathon in 2002 in regulation time and thereby achieved a lifelong goal. She was a well known figure on the Trail to Lover’s Point, jogging there almost daily. It was Ellen’s wish to be cremated, and for her ashes to be scattered along the Monterey Bay or Big Sur Coast. |
