| Events | Chapo received his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of New Mexico. In 1997 Chapo experience a serious auto accident, resulting in a traumatic brain injury and becoming medically disabled. He found fulfillment in assisting the elderly and the underserved in New Mexico and took great pride in his work. |
Joe Balderrama '69 said:
I first met Chapo in the 7th grade at Alta Vista, where they would hold the regional Golden Gloves tournaments. Chapo invited me to come and watch him box. I was very, very impressed by his athletic abilities. He was a very passionate and determined boxer. Years later, watching a professional boxer, "Smoking" Joe Frazier, I realized that I had seen the same style of boxing before. That was Chapo Ramirez, the way he shuffled his feet, kept his head down and dodge the opponents punches and swings. At age 14, he proudly earned the title of New Mexico Golden Gloves boxing champion. Chapo went on to be one of my best friends to the end of our senior year. What a great friend he was. May he RIP, and thanks for all the wonderful memories. Joe Balderrama
