| About Me | I am from a blue collar family. I was privileged to attend great elementary and secondary schools and then to attend UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara. With my wonderful education, I had many interesting jobs, culminating with my job of the state chief school officer, called State Superintendent of Public Instruction in California. With my very talented team we led the charge to establish statewide standards and drive the state toward a system of accountability for what children should learn. We fought to reduce class size, lengthen the school year, improve school libraries and technology, bring gardens to schools and improve children's nutrition.
