About Me | My childhood was spent moving from Army Post to Army Post as my Dad was a career soldier. I attended four h.s. (North Jr. H.S., Newburgh, NY, Frankfurt American H.S., Stuttgart American H.S.and Carlisle Sr. H.S., in Carlisle, PA) in four years and so have many, many friends across this great nation of ours and beyond. I was determined to stay in the same place for all four years when I chose a college and selected Boston University, first as a Liberal Arts major (I was headed for the Foreign Service) but transferred to Nursing after my freshman year. A major shift, but not one I've ever regretted, even for a moment. I was active in college through my sorority, Sigma Kappa, and managed to graduate in four years. Probably wouldn't have made that stage without the support of a wonderful BUSON faculty member, Shirley Guenthner, who took two of us by the ear and made sure she had our full attention the second semester of our junior year! Thank you, yet again, Shirley! I was able to complete my education at BU because I joined the Army Student Nurse Program and for that support, I paid back three years. I ended up staying on active duty, going Regular Army, going to RVN, getting an MEd in counseling, getting married, having three children.......then getting divorced. I loved nursing and I LOVED the Army. and loving what I did. I could go on for ages just about those years but I will spare you all....... I retired from the ANC not because I wanted to leave the Army, but because I had divorced and was trying to raise three children on my own. I knew I was going to have to work beyond even 30 years in the military, and I knew that the longer I waited to retire, the more difficult it would be to find a good position in the private sector. So few people understand how the military functions and unfortunately, do not always see the military as a solid preparation in leadership. If only they knew!! My first adventure after retirement was to take on a Master's in Nursing program at the University of Massachusetts at Worcester. I was in the first MS class and one of only five in the Administrative trac. I was, by far, the oldest of the group and the most experienced, which was a liability in many ways. I ended up completing all of the coursework but not the thesis so didn't graduate. A long story best told over LOTS of wine!! Twenty-one years as an Army Nurse allowed for much growth both personally and professionally. I had wonderful assignments, met stellar people, was mentored by men and women that I still admire, made incredible friends......and married......had three very special children.....and divorced after fourteen years of marriage. My twenty plus years in the private sector as a nurse executive were full of learning experiences as well. What I had experienced in the military prepared me well for "civilian" life, ie, working in the private sector.....I was involved in numerous of the ongoing challenges (still going on in health care) and found the work to be stimulating and I felt positive about my co...(read more) |
