About Me SERGEANT MAJOR LONNIE D. MARTIN USMC Retired Sergeant Major Lonnie D. Martin was born in Fort Clayton Canal Zone, Panama on 18 January 1950. He is a graduate of Camp Lejeune High School. Upon graduation he attended Mount Olive College and East Carolina University. Sergeant Major enlisted in the Marine Corps on 30 August 1970, and underwent recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. He then attended infantry training at Camp Geiger, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Sergeant Major Martin has served in a variety of billets both overseas and in CONUS during his thirty years of service as a Marine. Sergeant Major Martin served two tours on the Drill Field. They were both at Parris Island South Carolina. During these tours he serviced as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Drill Master and Recruit Company First Sergeant. While on his second tour he also was assigned as the First Sergeant of Service Company, H&S Bn Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. Sergeant Major Martin also had assignments with the Marine Security Guard Battalion as a Detachment Commander in Sana'a, Yemen and Bridgetown, Barbados. He was later assigned as an Instructor Advisor at the Marine Security Guard School; Operations Chief; NCOIC of the Marine Security Guard Screening Team; and later as Chief Instructor, Marine Security Guard School. Sergeant Major Martin later served as the First Sergeant of the Marine Corps Security Forces Company, Yorktown, Virginia (Puller Hall), from June 1988 to June 1990. Sergeant Major Martin was appointed a Sergeant Major during June 1990 and assumed the duties as the Sergeant Major of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Arizona. Sergeant Major Martin then was reassigned as the Sergeant Major of Marine Attack Squadron VMA 214 (The Blacksheep), where he did a WestPac deployment with the Squadron. Sergeant Major Martin then transfused to Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni Japan where he served as the Sergeant Major of Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12, Marine Aircraft Group 12, and later as the Sergeant Major of Marine Aircraft Group 12. Sergeant Major Martin then was assigned as the Sergeant Major of Marine Security Guard Battalion (State Department), located in Quantico, Virginia, from June 1996 to October 1997. On 17 October 1997, he assumed duties as Sergeant Major, of Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia. Sergeant Major Martinâ??s last active duty assignment was as the Sergeant Major Marine Corps Base Quantico VA. Sergeant Major Martin retired from the Marine Corps during May of 2000. Sergeant Major Martin's personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Five Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Combat action Ribbon, as well as numerous Military Unit, Service and Civilian Awards. Sergeant Major Martin Retired is still serving the Corps and holds the position as Manager of the Student Officers Quarters at the Basic School, Camp Barrett, Quantico, Virginia. On his off duty time Sergeant Major Martin Retired is a Docent at the National Museum of the Marine Corps where he has conducted hundreds of tours. Sergeant Major Martin is married to the former Judith Marie Kuzan of Lackawanna, New York. They have two sons; Timothy Ryan who now resides in Goddard Maryland and is a Computer Engineer with Lockheed Martin and Chief Warrant Officer Lonnie D.
