About J. Donald Gleichman, Jr., age 73, of Mechanicsburg, peacefully entered into eternity on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Holy Spirit Hospital. Born February 24, 1944 in Norfolk, VA, he was a son of the late John D. Sr. and Helen (Shoemaker) Gleichman.
Don was a 1962 graduate of Camp Hill High School and stationed with the U.S. Army in Kagnew Station, Asmara, Eritrea from 1965 to 1969 where he fell in love at first sight with his beautiful Lucia. They married July 20, 1969 on the day man first walked on the moon and their love was known and witnessed by so many.
Don was the President of The Gleichman Organization, Ltd. for over forty years, providing local families and businesses values-based estate planning, personal and business insurances, charitable/philanthropic and wealth advisory services. Throughout his career, Don earned numerous designations including Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP) from The American College, CLU, ChHC, ACBC, CBC, RHU, REBC; and was the recipient of many industry awards for leadership, like multi-qualifying member of Top-of-the-Table/Million Dollar Round Table.
In more recent years, Don went on to a second career with Stewardship: A Mission of Faith – serving the diocese of Pennsylvania with resources and programs to help them live the Gospel message of stewardship in their families, workplace and community.
Don was an active member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg and former longtime member of St. Joseph Church. Don served his Church as Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Youth Ministries, CCD Teacher, organizer and teacher of parish studies in Apologetics and new programs like That Man Is You. Don was active with the Harrisburg Diocese Cursillo Movement since 1978.
Personally, Don led multiple Bible/Gospel reflection groups over the years which he attended weekly or were held in his home, and was deeply committed to Prison Ministry on a weekly basis for over thirty years. He cared deeply about all those he touched.
He was a member of the Order of Sons of Italy in America, West Shore; had been active with the West Shore Chamber of Commerce for many years; was a former member and Past President of Mechanicsburg Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and former member of Camp Hill Lions Club.
Most important to Don was his soulmate Lucia and family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, mentor and friend. Don fully embraced Lucia's Italian heritage and was responsible for many Eritrean families becoming American citizens.
Surviving are his loving wife Lucia Palumbo Gleichman; daughter Vania (Adam) Jaroch of Mechanicsburg; son Christian Gleichman of New Cumberland; four grandchildren, Eliana, Eva and Jonah Jaroch and Alexandra Vita Gleichman; sister Gail (Floyd) Eckenroad of Carlisle; brother Neil Gleichman of Idaho; mother-in-law Hadas Gebru, sister-in-law Tina Astier and many nieces and nephews.
