About Me | After graduation I attended Idaho State University earning a BS in Nutrition. After college I joined the Army and completed a 12-month Dietetic Internship at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, Texas, became a Registered Dietitian, and stayed on staff at BAMC. I met my husband, Steve Griffith, while at BAMC. Steve was an Army aviator and getting ready to go to Viet Nam. Upon his return we married and moved to Ft. Knox, Kentucky, where I worked at Ireland Army Medical Center. After leaving the Army I did consulting work in nutrition. In 1973 we moved to Germany were we lived for the next 3 ½ years. I was unable to work there as there were no civilian dietitians in the Army hospitals so went to night school and earned a Master Degree in Education. From Germany we moved to Washington State. In 1990 I went back to work full time, this time for the State of Washington DSHS. I stayed there two years acting as a consultant to the three different divisions. In 1992 I moved to the Superintendent of Public Instruction (Department of Education) as the state director of one of USDA’s Child Nutrition Programs, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). I kept this position for 18 years and retired in 2010. I always wanted to travel and had lots of opportunity with my job. I have been part of USDA’s Integrity Task Force and assisted the OIG and USDA in developing federal regulations and training for staff at state and national levels. I served on the advisory council for the National Food Service Management Institute at the University of Mississippi, was on the advisory council for Nutrition and Dietetics Program at Central Washington University, and was an active in numerous professional organizations. In 2000 I was selected as the Washington Outstanding Dietitian and served as the President of the National Association of CACFP Professionals in 2004-2005. My husband has retired from two jobs—the Army where he was an instructor pilot of Black Hawk helicopters and then from the Department of Revenue. Our children, Stephen and Jennifer, are in the local area. Our son is married and he and his wife are the parents of two boys. Until recently our daughter lived in Washington D.C. working for Congress. She is now back in Seattle and still working for one of our U.S. Senators. Our daughter is not married. Steve and I are both glad to be retired and have enjoyed traveling and spending time with our grandchildren. I always said I wanted to travel and we have done just– we are getting to our bucket list! We have been to Europe, Mexico, Bermuda, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, and numerous places in the US. Our ne...(read more) |
