Class of 1978

Proud to be a Buccaneer!

I am a member of the Class of 1978, and as everyone goes through life's ups and downs. I had lived my share of them.

This past December, I was awarded "Survivor Of The Year" award from my fellow Board Members of the Texas Brain Injury Alliance. I have survived two types of cancer and a brain hemorrhage. There is a reason God keeps me here.

One of the reasons I believe God keeps bringing me back is to reconnect our Classmates. I have been the Chair of a few of our past reunions, and it was just before our 30-year reunion, after which I had survived my brain injury and was making our "In Memory" board to display at the reunion. When I realized... "My name was almost on this list?" Then I began to wonder, how would I want to be remembered? Which is why I am so passionate about our reunions and keeping us reunited!

Coming up this May 18th, 2018 will be our 40-year reunion. Exactly 40 years to the day we walked across that stage at Hopper Field. This brings my heart great joy!

It is because of the hardships of my childhood, that I hold such great admiration for all of my Classmates of the Class of 1978. Because I completed my years of High School with most of the kids I started out with years ago at T.W. Ogg Elementary in Clute, TX many years ago.

Born in Freeport, Community Hospital and lived in Clute. Started the first grade at T.W. Ogg, through the first grade. Our family moved up North to Ohio where we moved at least once maybe twice a year. Years and many schools later, my Mother divorced my father and my Mother, sister and I moved back to Lake Jackson in 1971. I was finally starting to feel safe again. In 1974, my got remarried to Stan Kirby and we were a whole family again. It is because of those years through Lake Jackson Intermediate and Brazoswood High School that helped me be a better person and learn to feel like I belonged.

High School years are not always the happiest of times, but for me, whether they were good or bad experiences I treasure them all because I learned from them and I felt like I belonged and was able to make friends. It was like all of the puzzle pieces finally fit together and everything made sense.

Bringing our Classmates together is my way of giving back to all of those who helped my life make sense again, and also to give respect to those we have lost as well. I have created a website for our Class at www.bwood1978.com and I have a Facebook group page https://www.facebook.com/groups/Bwood1978/ with almost 300 of our Classmates connected!

Were keeping the Buccaneer spirit alive!!!

Every morning I wake up to another day of life and thank GOD for that gift.
