Marva graduated from UC San Diego with a Bachelor's degree in English and education, and a minor in journalism and psychology. She also pursued post-graduate studies in radio and television at USC. She worked at the Los Angeles Times for 14 years in various capacities, including graphics researcher and writer for the Los Angeles and Orange County Business sections. From The Times, she moved to the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she was a police and court editor. She joined Variety Magazine in Los Angeles in May 1997 as Graphics Director of the Special Reports Department. She was a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and was writing and producing a documentary about her favorite musical group, The Temptations, at the time of her death. At some point in her career, Marva adopted the professional name of "Dallas M. Jackson". Her obituaries were published in Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117765620) and the Los Angeles Times (http://articles.latimes.com/2000/jan/26/news/mn-57890) under her professional name. Her obituary in Variety states that she died of "natural causes".
