I can't 100% validate that he's dead since I didn't call his parents to confirm, but I did read in the local papers about a Scott Tompkins from Overland Park dying in California while trying to surf after a storm. I hadn't talked to Scott in at least 4 years from the time of the article I saw in the news, but ages and what he would do matched the news story. I believe the death would be around 1997 or so, but am not 100% sure.
