Favorite School Memory | AL GUERN: Class of 73:: Just a REAL STORY from my BHS YEARS: Knowing that I needed a minimum of 2 years of a foreign Language to go to college, I thought that I would just take FRENCH again as I entered 10th grade. Now; I don't wish to speak ill of anyone, HOWEVER:< --That means I'm gonna do it anyway: as a 14year old boy, standing in that long line, I saw the French teacher and from my vantage point; I saw a cranky, stern and well lets just say unappealing to this young boy's eyes, mean-azz woman. SO: Time for plan B (By the way: there was no plan B) So, looking for other options, I thought: SPANISH:; I went to the table and saw the Spanish teacher-NOT HAPPENING; NO WAY-NO HOW: Frenchy was looking better at that moment: Okay:: Latin? No Frigg’n way <-- Don't think we used Frigg'n in those years> But Latin? God bless the really really smart students who took Latin: I thought to myself- Latin? ? Isn’t that like just this side of Sanskrit? Not gonna do it: NOPE! Plan B was NOT working out very well. My options looked bleak and as I was heading back to the French sign up table: It happened:: (Imagine a Bo Derek running on the beach moment) A foreign language table with no line and an exquisite example of God's wonderful work right there at the table: Her Name? Ms. Garin: Ms. Garin: maybe all of 23, fresh from college, sitting on one of those HIGH STOOLS; In a SHORT DRESS: Ohhhh yea! German, the land of my fore fathers: This was a sign: It made complete sense <--- Except I had no interest in German as a language or any base of knowledge of the language or prepared to learn German or put forth the effort to master German: BUT it was a sign :: AND Man she was easy on the eyes: So as I signed up I gave Ms. Garin one of my best-"What snacks do you like" questions (a real hit with the 12-15 year old group). She smiled said something that now seems like it came from one of Charlie Brown's teachers- wa wa waaa wa wa~ but she looked pretty while she was "wa waa wa wa-ing back~ from that HIGH STOOL~in that SHORT DRESS~ Okay:: Back to the story: Ms. Garin would walk into her classroom just as the bell rang. She disliked the map being pulled down over the chalkboard. I don't know why, she didn't use the chalkboard that much~ she did however sit on the HIGH STOOL~ always in a SHORT DRESS~ (There was no way I was gonna PASS THIS CLASS!) So I devised a prank that everyone would enjoy: 1 day, I got into the classroom earlier than anyone else: I took some chalk and wrote on the chalkboard a limerick of sorts~ pure genius in fact. Powerful and riveting were words I would have used in 1970. Then I pulled down the map~ and the trap was set: As I expected, Ms. Garin showed up and sat ~ON THE HIGH STOOL, WEARING A SHORT DRESS~ and then she started the lesson: Within moments, Ms. Garin glanced back and saw the Map was pulled down, she slid off~THE HIGH STOOL~ WEARING HER SHORT DRESS~ ( YEAH ME!) she walked over to the Map~ I could barely contain my excitement~ She pulled at the bottom of the map: 1 time~ (come on) a second time ( Holy KRAP!) finally on the third attempt, it catches and zips upward to expose my talented poem: My ode to Ms. Garin. She saw the writing and had to step back to read the verse I so boldly composed: She paused~ she froze~ she stared and read it a time or two or three~ My memory says that with her body facing the board, her head spun around like Linda Blair and she locked eyes on me for 1 moment, her head then continued it's 360 degree turn and she erased my brilliance from the board. She never responded nor reacted to my writing. We never spoke of THAT POEM: The one that read: Ms. Garin is so very nice She always gives me good advice Her hair's as soft as BUNNY FUR I think I'd like to sleep with her: Masterwork! Masterpiece! BRAVO! Man I miss high school! Ms. Garin gave me a C on my repor...(read more) |
