Gary Domain

Class of 1965

November 27,2012
New Bern, NC

Dear Hall of Fame Committee,

The intent of this letter is to nominate Gary Domain, Bethel High School Class of 1965, to the Athletic Hall of fame.
Gary Domain was a member of the football and track teams at BHS during each of his four years there (1961-65). Gary would be the first freshman to start in a football game at Bethel and would then go on to play in each game for the next four years. This is a staggering accomplishment by any measurement. Gary was a recognized serious competitor by all opponents and was held in the highest esteem by teammates and coaches alike. Opponents rarely enjoyed their time on the football field when positioned across from the indefatigable Gary Domain. Gary certainly led by example and set the standard for players for many years as he excelled on both offense and defense. Gary cast a huge shadow on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Coach Bill Swanson was astonished by his massive drive to win on the field. In the fall of 1964, he was selected to the WCC All-Star team and received All-State Honorable Mention recognition from the New Haven Register. In addition, Gary was an invitee to the annual Connecticut Nutmeg Bowl.
Gary's track tenure was no less spectacular as he set and held the CIAC indoor shot put record of 51'8" for nine years and the outdoor distance record for eleven years. Gary's personal best discus throw of 134'6" still places him in the elite class of competitors in Connecticut today. Bethel High School placed second in the state indoor meet at UCONN and would go on to win the outdoor championship in New Haven due to scores garnered by Gary in the shot put, discus and javelin. This extraordinary triumph signaled the beginning of Bethel High School's track presence throughout Connecticut and New England.
Gary, and the seniors of the class of 1965, was led by first year coach, John DeMille, who gently guided and motivated a young team to his first of many championships at Bethel High School. Gary and teammates came to embrace and positively respond to the high standards of competition set by coach DeMille.
Gary would hone his athletic skills on area golf courses and become an accomplished and savvy player known for his goodwill and crisp sense of humor. It is with an ardent sense of pride, as a teammate and friend of Gary Domain, that I confidently nominate him for inclusion to the Bethel High School Hall of Fame.
Most Sincerely,
Dave Campbell (Class of 1965)
