| About Me | Don as Tauno witnessed the assassination of President Kennedy by the radio broadcasts which Army inductees were allowed to hear while taking their entrance physical examinations. Imprisoned in 1964-1965 for refusing, on November 22, 1963, to be trained to kill, he used his prison time in befriending the Dakota, the Lakota, and the Nakota, Native Americans relocated from north-central United States to the federal prison in south-central Arizona. While inside, he had only one visitor: a San Francisco Lutheran minister, who gave him Communion. Released, he opposed: “The War.” “segregation,” and “racial stereotypes.” An Ural-Altai, he passes for a Caucasian, a “pin” to stick the balloon of the idea that equality's gifts were given without spit-in-the-face. From prison, he knew that inside is not “washtay (good)”. Inside rots anyone. Nine years after release, he fought for his beliefs, but alcohol addiction killed his energy and rottened his ideals. Alcoholism ate his dedication to Social Justice and his will to write poetry. No longer could he do anything but sniff, drink and smoke. Then he dropped into recovery. Ten years into recovery, he slipped but began once again to sober up. In 2021 he celebrated 30 years clean and sober of drugs, drink and cigarettes. But Climate Change appeared as a sick joke. “Cough! Cough!” Don smashed a marriage, lied to a potential wife, and has lived in stinky clothing. He is not a “good” person. But he also has done the duties of a co-director of a Counseling Agency and has submitted his poetry for publications to Finnish American magazines and newspapers, only to have some of them printed. He created, produced and hosted a weekly two-hour radio program called “Live Poets,” broadcasted on “KPOO,” “Poor Peoples’ Radio” on Saturdays. A co-founder of “The Bay Area Poets’ Coalition” under the leadership of Carol Lee Sanchez, Tauno contributes time to presenting others’ poetry.Today he lives close to the “Poets’ Corner” in Berkeley, close enough to the U. C. Berkeley’s Doe Library to periodically make use of it. (Joke) He virtually reads his poetry in many sections of the country. But his mouth rots.
