Retired, February, 2004. 1999-2000 Visual Journalism Graphics Consultant, El Mundo, Madrid, Spain. 1988-1999 Director, Graphics / News In Motion animated news graphics, Washington, D.C., for more than 400 newspapers, 52 television stations in US and around the world. Started with a staff of 3; doing not much more than basic indicators, maps and fact boxes. Presently; staff of 15 produces full color national & international daily news graphics, projects, standing features and animated news graphics for television 1986-1988 AME Graphics, The Detroit News, Detroit Michigan. Overall responsible for 18 person staff producing news / feature graphics and design for 800,000-daily newspaper. Responsible for creating and developing one of the first successful news graphics departments in the US for a major newspaper; consisting of graphic editors, researchers, artists and illustrators using Macintosh computers. 1985-1986 Graphics Director for the St. Petersburg Times, St. Petersburg Florida, circulation over 400,000. One of the original founders of USA TODAY; responsible for the implementation and concept of news graphics, rendering daily graphics, developing new production technology, art directing staff of 8, creating the original USA TODAY weather page, graphics editing, introduced the position of “graphics researcher,” assisted in newspaper design and staff training. 1974-1880 Art Director, The Lansing State Journal, Lansing Michigan, circulation over 65,000. Responsible for daily news and feature art, coordinated promotion for circulation, news and advertising, supervised the news and advertising graphics department of eight. 1972-1974 Art Director, Illustrator and Artist for the Denver Post, Denver Colorado, circulation over 400,000. Responsible for Roto Gravure / ROP art, illustration and managing graphics staff of six. 1960-1972 Artist, Illustrator, Photographer and Advertising Sales Representative for the News-Palladium and Herald-Press, Benton Harbor / St. Joseph Michigan. Circulation over 32,000. Responsible for servicing 40 ad accounts, art / illustration and promotion material. Awards, achievements Several Silver and Awards of Distinction for informational graphics, illustration and design from The Society of News Design. Three TIME Magazine Award for the best use of maps over three consecutive years. Three Outstanding Achievement awards from the American Cartographic Association. The 1987 Best of Gannett graphics award. A frequent faculty member with responsibilities for coordinating, conducting and speaking to information graphic workshops at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, St. Petersburg Florida. An instructor for 10 years for the annual Rhode Island School of Design Informational Graphics Workshop, Providence, Rhode Island. Other speaking, teaching engagements and workshops include; The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, St. Petersburg, FL, The Society of News Design, APME, API, ANPA, IFRA, The Freedom Forum plus numerous Press associations. Conducted seminars in Oslo, Norway, Aaurst, Denmark, Stockholm, Sweden, Zurich, Switzerland, Frankfurt, Germany. Previous key speaker and instructor for two consecutive years at the Macintosh Summit, sponsored by Guy Kawasaki, Apple Computer and the University of Southern California. For the enhancement of visual journalism, at the request of The United States Information Agency and the United States Department of State; to conduct a one month training session for newspapers, Tallinn, Estonia, 1992. Consultant to El Mundo Newspaper, Madrid, Spain, 1999; assisted in streamlining and automating the efficiency of one of the most visual sophisticated publications. Winner of the 1994, Knight Ridder Entrepreneurial Excellence Award. Participants were from all of the world-wide operations of Knight Ridder. Winner of the 2004 Society of News Desigh, Lifetime Achievement Award.
