1987 Wresting Team

Class of 1987

The 1987 Wresting Team was the first team State Championship (ever) for Bennington High School. This team scoed over 200 points in every regular season tournament. Led by Jason Detlefs, Ben Leehy and Trevor Weatherfield, this team was as dominant as any team that the the state has ever seen. The key was the underclassmen which included Mike Laaker, Steve Costanzo and Scott Schmidt. The biggest reason for the success of this team was Hall of Fame Coach Rick Allgood. Coach Allgood worked very hard and took his wretlers to tournaments all over the region during the summer to prepare for this historic run. This team broke the barrier that has led to mutilple team state championships in all sports. The proof is well documented within the state archives as well as Bennington record books. Undefeated in tournaments and duals. I present the 1987 first ever Team State Champions!

It would be great to pull this team back together for a night to honor and see the program today. Most of the wrestlers from this team have not seen the new High School. Unfortunately we have lost Trevor Weatherfield and Jason Detlefs in separate incidents which are both in the Nebraska High School Wresting Hall of Fame. This team knew that with a State Championship, it would break that belief that Bennington could and would become state champions in other sports.
