About Me	After high school graduation, I went to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa where I graduated in 1973. After my first year of college, my family moved from Belleville to Kansas City. After college, I started rabbinical school at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. My first year of study was in Jerusalem, Israel, and then spent the following four years at Cincinnati, Ohio campus. I was ordained a rabbi in 1978 and took my first position as Director of Hillel at SUNY Stony Brook (NY). In 1982 I was named Executive Director of the Brown University/RI School of Design Hillel Foundation and Associate University Chaplain. I served in that position for eighteen years until I was appointed Senior Fellow of the Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University. I stayed in that position for sixteen more years and retired from Brown in 2016. For two years (2015-2017) I also directed the Helen Hudson Foundation for Homeless America. I have been retired from paid employment since 2017, though I remain active in the Jewish community leading the Soulful Shabbat Project, a renewal community that utilizes silence, gentle yoga, chanting, traditional prayer and Torah study as the backbone of worship. I also remain active in salient community issues, especially homelessness, housing and other issues facing low-income Rhode Islanders. I am a founder of the RI Interfaith Coalition to Reduce Poverty and past President of the RI Board of Rabbis.
