Favorite School Memory	Senior year, Homecoming. Canepa's reaction when I sat down next to him at the assembly/pep rally/whatever it was and told him the dog ate the parakeet. That week, my parents went on vacation. My sister went on vacation AND left me her car. Still, being the giant, sickening choir boy I was, I caused no trouble. Friday I was up early to work on the float (and what possessed me to overcome pathological shyness to participate I'll never know), then stopped home before heading back to the HS. The first evidence of trouble came through the window. The bottom of the bird cage? Gone - as gone as Mom's prize parakeet. Gone. Gone! I threw open the door. A scatter of powder blue feathers dotted the dog's favorite rug. I couldn't help but think of crumbs left in the aftermath of a good meal. The schnauzer paced, avoiding eye contact. It didn't take CSI to figure it out. The dog jumped up, knocked the bottom off the cage and... well, poultry was probably a nice break from dry kibble. I wore a stricken look when I sat down next to John. "Mike, what's wrong?" he asked, genuinely concerned. It took me a moment to find words. All I could come up with was, "My dog ate the bird."
