Favorite School Memory Band - Randal Verdi was the Drum Major and it was the first time the pep squad went on the field with us. It was Homecoming... Randal being so astute and always in perfect position and stance this particular night there was NO WAY he was prepared for what he seen when the band stopped playing and he turned around to face us. The Band/Pep Squad, Flag girls, Twirlers & whoever was on the field was SUPPOSED to be half on one 45 yard line and the other half on the other 45 yard line so the homecoming court could walk through the path to the podium. When Randal turned around I thought he was going to fall down either laughing or crying it was really tough to tell from his face. We were ALWAYS supposed to look forward but Randal's reaction taunted the rest of us to look around... we knew it HAD to be bad just from what we could see ahead of ourselves and our peripheral vision but when we looked around we were no more prepared for what we saw than Randal was. There was NO path people were all over the field and the homecoming court had to zig zag to the podium. The band members were scared shitless to go back to the band room because we thought Ms. Heard was going to kill us and if she didn't Randal surely would. Whatever possessed the school to want to TRY to do the very same thing the following year is beyond all conceivable understanding. It was decided that Randy Simms and myself would do a very simple drum tap onto the field and behold it was a disaster just as much as the prior year only this time Randy and I were the ones sweating out the after game round up in the band room. My mom always said Randal was one of the best Drum Majors she had ever seen and when he turned around that first year she nearly split a gut laughing at Randal's reaction more than the mess up on the field. I honestly don't remember a lot of what Randal looked like because...(read more)
