Art was an out standing basketball and baseball player in high school . Avon won the section 5 class B championship in 1943. I was a member of that team and can state without hesitation, we would not have won anything w/o Art. He made the section 5 All-Star team in 1943. After HS he played semi-pro basketball with a very good Avon VFW team We played and won many tournaments. In the finals of one of these, against a highly favored team from Bergen NY, he guarded Fran Miller, former captain of Syracuse's basketball team. Art held him to 4 points and scored 22 himself . We won the tournament. I still have the score sheet. Art was a fantastic defensive player and seemed to be able to elevate his game when the need be. He was given a try out with the NBA team Rochester Royals but was deemed not rugged enough to play in that league,altho he still practiced with them. He wasn't recruited by colleges because there were few blacks were on college teams then.He worked in a factory til he died.
