I signed up for the Navy while still in high school, choosing a rate of Sonar Technician with advanced electronics training. Boot camp began in July 1974 and I turned 18 while home on leave afterwards. During boot camp, I volunteered for the submarine service. I spent most of rest of my 20 year Navy career on nuclear powered fast attack submarines in San Diego and Pearl Harbor, the USS Snook SSN 592, USS Barb SSN 596, USS Omaha SSN 692, and USS Puffer SSN 652.
