About Arthur Mowry Jr., 79 avid outdoorsman, businessman
May 19, 2010

Arthur Mowry Jr. started the journey to his new life on May 16, 2010.

Art, an avid outdoorsman, was active in many parts of life. A successful businessman, he was a core member of Mowry Construction Co., a design, build firm responsible for the development of many homes, churches and commercial buildings in the Ashland area. He then went on to found Century 21 Mowry Realty Corp., a leader in the area for the marketing of property throughout Ashland and Wayne counties.

Born July 22, 1930, to Arthur and Virginia (Doyle) Mowry in Canfield, he soon discovered his love for the outdoors. He worked on his grandfather's farm, which began the legacy of his renowned work ethic.

During his high school years, he moved to the Ashland area where he became a two-year letterman on the Arrow football team under the tutelage of coach Cloyce Taylor. Football became one of Art's passions and later in life he became a season ticket-holder at Ashland Community Stadium with the same seats for more than 28 years.

Arthur served his country as a proud member of the United States Air Force in the Korean Conflict and returned home to begin his life as a loving husband and father. He met his "lady love," Mary Ann Vogel, and soon started his legacy as it is known today.

They started their family with six children, Sue (Frank) Goschinski, Tina (Edward) Chatt and Tammy (Dean) Emmons, Tim, Terry (Kelly) and Todd Mowry. Arthur and Mary Ann had 21 grandchildren, Gavin (Nicole) and Shawn Goschinski, Jared (Brooke) Dunham, Jennifer (Victor) McQuillen, Keelie McNamara, Craig (Lesley) Chatt, Samantha (Jason) Glenister, Niki (Derek) Taylor, Nathan and Natalie Emmons, Steffan, Brock (Amanda), Matthew, Samantha, Justin and Jason Mowry, Kip (Brittany) Garrison, Carly, Clayton and Colton Mowry; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Arthur had two great passions in his life -- his family and the outdoors. He lived every day for the next hunting or fishing trip. He traveled all over North America hunting wild game and practicing conservation to preserve the sport for the next generation.

His greatest joy in life was sharing in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He could be seen at almost any sporting event in the area, where usually one of his families was participating, whether it be baseball, soccer, softball, lacrosse, basketball, track and field, wrestling, golf, volleyball, motocross, cheerleading or Sweet Sixteen. He lived his life through his kids and many children in Ashland knew him as "Grandpa Mowry." His participation in the lives of many young people helped mold them into what they are today.

During Art's life, he served as president of Ashland County Home Builders, president of Ashland Board of Realtors and president and treasurer of Ashland High School Booster Club. He was a lifetime member of the Ashland Elks Lodge and the American Legion. He also was a member of the NRA, Ashland County Parks District and the Ashland County Conservation League. He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur F. and Virginia (Doyle) Mowry; brother, Russell J. Mowry; and grandson, Clayton Mowry.
