George played varsity basketball on the Delta League championship team of ‘67-‘68. During Armijo’s run Frank Gordon, the Daily Republic’s Sports Editor, consistently wrote opinion pieces predicting for us to lose and even when we won his headline might read like this: “Underdog Indians sneak past Vanden”.
So when we clinched the championship, George led the team in carrying Mr Gordon into the showers for a soaking.
His humor, enthusiasm, loyalty and leadership made him loved and admired by many.

George played first base for the Sheldon Oilers Little League baseball team who for several years consistently won the league championships. George was awesome at first base and he hit more home runs than everyone else on the team combined, because he knew he would have trouble getting the first base if he didn't. George was the soul of the team. He was a gentle giant.
