About | LAKEVILLE -- Philip "Phil" Durnin Paulson, 51, of Lakeville died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after a sudden illness. He was the husband of Ann Marie (Graney) Paulson. Born in Taunton, son of Richard M. Paulson Sr. of Taunton and the late Jean L. (Hickey) Paulson, Mr. Paulson had lived in Taunton prior to moving to Lakeville 16 years ago. He was a communicant of SS. Martha and Mary Church in Lakeville. A 1966 graduate of Monsignor James Coyle High School in Taunton, Mr. Paulson received his bachelor's degree in 1970 from Providence College where he also earned his master's degree in 1971 and was a doctoral candidate. He was a member of the Coyle High School Band and later of the Reserve Officer Training Corps Band in Providence. Mr. Paulson was employed in his earlier years at Doherty's Market in Taunton for more than 17 years. He was a teacher at the Cohanet Middle School in Taunton from 1971 to 1972 and then taught at the George R. Austin Middle School in Lakeville for 12 years and at Apponequet Regional High School for the past 16 years. He taught United States history and government and contemporary world problems at Apponequet. Mr. Paulson also was an adjunct instructor at Fisher College for the past 20 years. A fourth degree Knight of Columbus, Mr. Paulson also was a member of the Brigade of the American Revolution, the New Bedford Rod and Gun Club and the Taunton Rifle and Pistol Association. His professional associations include the Freetown-Lakeville Teachers Association, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the National Council of Social Studies and the Southeast Council of Social Studies. He was a past scoutmaster for Troop 6 in Taunton. In 1972, Mr. Paulson was a founding member of the Taunton Colonial Minute Men and also was a founding member in 1974 of the 11th Massachusetts Regiment. He was a member of the 10th Massachusetts Light Infantry. He was most recently involved in developing a French and Indian War Colonial unit. Mr. Paulson's hobbies and interests included black powder shooting, primitive shooting and participating as a historical re-enactor. A naturalist and community activist, he also was interested in music and the arts. An avid reader, he enjoyed story telling and politics. Mr. Paulson and his wife had been married for 16 years. |
