About	Army 2nd Lt. Michael Robert Girdano, 23, of Kiski Township, was killed in action on Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, in Chowkay Valley, Province of Konar, Afghanistan. He was born Feb. 28, 1985, in Pittsburgh to Robert and Cynthia (Ferkatch) Girdano, of Kiski Township, and lived in Apollo all of his life. Michael was a 2003 graduate of Apollo-Ridge High School, where he was captain of the football team, the second baseman on the baseball team and a member of the National Honor Society and participated in many other activities including the German and Ski clubs and the Quiz Bowl. He was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Apollo, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Michael was nominated to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., by U.S. Rep. John Murtha, of Johnstown, and graduated in 2007. He also is survived by brother Nunzio A. Girdano, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; sister Tina A. Girdano, of McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas; maternal grandparents Michael and Mary Ferkatch and paternal grandparents Robert R. and Dorina Girdano, all of Penn Hills, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday in the CURRAN-SHAFFER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 100 Owens View Ave., Apollo. Funeral Mass wil be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. James Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. John T. Sweeney as celebrant. Everyone please meet at the chuch. Burial will be in Plum Creek Cemetery.
