About	Karl Kvistberg, 54 Rhinelander, WI June 13, 1959 - Sept. 28, 2013 Karl Kvistberg was born on June 13, 1959 to Shirley (Good) and Gerald Kvistberg. Karl was confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church, and graduated from Apollo High School in 1977. He attended the U of M, where he was a member of the Air Force ROTC, and EMT, and volunteered with the elderly in addition to his studies. Karl earned his PhD in Microbiology from Arizona State University in 1987. He completed post-doctoral research in genetics before beginning his 20 year teaching career at Nicolet College in Rhinelander, WI. Karl was well-known and admired by his students, and many of them credit Karl with their success as nurses. An avid cyclist, outdoorsman & traveler in his younger days, Karl willing gave his time and energy to care for his mother during her ten-year battle with cancer. Shortly after her death, Karl himself was diagnosed with cancer, yet continued to serve as a companion and caregiver for his father. This is who Karl was - sacrificial, devoted, loyal, hard-working. He invested everything he had in his family, friends and students. He delighted in serving others, and was the first to lend a helping hand, a listening ear, tell you a "funny", or simply hand you a beer. Karl's character was never more evident in the courage and wisdom he showed upon his terminal cancer diagnosis. He faced it with his signature practicality & wit, and thought more of his family than himself. A fighter until the very end, Karl was reunited in Heaven with his parents & his beloved dog, Fritz, on September 28, 2013, just as the sun was setting and shone on his peaceful face. Karl is survived by his brother Kurt (Julie), sister Kristine, nephews and nieces, Matthew, Ella, Emily, Abby, John, and Joe.
