Greetings from your Senior Class President! I want to officially announce our 35-year class reunion to be held on Saturday, September 6th, 2014 at Serum’s in downtown Anoka. I have led the past efforts on the 20, 25, and 30 year reunions, with the help of a very dedicated committee of volunteers (Sheila Kulick, Jodi Hill, Anne Wenholz, Julie Olson, Becky Leger, Lisa Haik, and Patty Olson), all for who I am truly grateful.
This time around, I am going to do things quite differently. Instead of doing the “hotel banquet-room thing,” I am going to host a casual get together with no up-front cost. I think that in today’s day and age, the use of the internet and social media have advanced to the point that I believe most of our classmates will be made aware of the event between now and the reunion date, which is about 5 months away.
By way of background: Starting with our 20-year reunion in 1999, followed by the 25 and 30-year reunions, we had hired a reunion service each time to do most of the work for us. It was difficult, no scratch that, impossible, to get volunteers willing to do the immense amount of legwork trying to locate and notify a large class like ours. Everyone is busy with careers and family. The services did a decent job but it made the per-person cost for the event very high, since their profit was built into the ticket price. So, in lieu of another expensive and not-so-well attended event, I have decided to take a different tack.
Basically, I am trying to get everyone at the same bar at the same time. I feel that the success of a reunion is dependent on the people, not the location or other amenities. This way someone can just show up and spend as little or as much money as they want. Basically, the plan is just to show up and pay as you go off the menu, on your own.
I picked Serum’s because of a combination of factors:
Large indoor venue, two levels
Huge deck out back (that allows smoking)
3) Good food that is reasonably priced
Full alcoholic beverage selection
It’s a fun bar
Live music upstairs starting at 9:00 PM for those interested
It’s in downtown Anoka... back to our roots
I picked a Saturday, assuming that it is the easiest day of the week for most people. I chose an early start time (4:00 PM) to take advantage of hoped-for good weather out on the deck, and to give everyone more time to socialize. People can show up whenever they want, the bar will be open. It’s five o’clock somewhere! I chose the Saturday after Labor Day assuming that most people are less likely to be out of town (on vacation or up north). Even though a lot of schools will have started, it is on a Saturday and still doable for most people.
Here’s the one and only thing I need from you, my classmates. Please, please, please... help us spread the word! Please call and tell every classmate you know.
