Margaret King Iaquinto
Class of 1963
In 1991, as a ham radio operator with callsign VK3CFI in Australia, I made contact with the Russian space station, MIR. Yes, I had studied Russian. After getting to know those cosmonauts they asked for help in setting up packet radio. I understood how to set up the computer system and the special modem (called a terminal node controller).
During the 5 years of contacts -- recall Sergei Krikalev U5MIR who was in space when the USSR became Russia -- I received the highest award the Australian amateur radio association could give for my contacts between high school students and the cosmonauts on MIR and for helping them.
