Mark died as a result of exposure to debris after responding to the Pentagon in the aftermath of American Airlines Flight #77 collided into the Pentagon. He lived for 12 years and discovered that he was sick in November of 2012, with Multiple Mylomea. He died after 11 months of chemo in Reston Town Center, Reston, Virginia. He is survived by his son Scott, sister Lynn, Brothers Paul and David and many nieces and nephews.
