About Me John William Nelson Jr received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from Ottawa University in 1971. He received his Master of Public Administration Degree from the Henry Block School of Business and Public Administration, University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1978; and his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from the School of Dentistry of The University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1982. In 1989 he completed the Geriatric Oral Health Fellowship Program at the school of Dentistry. Prior to his matriculation to the UMKC School of Dentistry, Dr Nelson served in Law Enforcement with the Kansas City Police Department, leaving with the rank of Sergeant. During his tenure on the Kansas City Missouri Police Department he received the department's Meritorious Service Citation twice and was also given the Bronze Award For Meritorious Service by the Metropolitan Police Chiefs Association. He worked under Clarence M. Kelly who became the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations in 1973. The American Academy of Professional Law Enforcement conferred membership on Dr Nelson in 1975. During his undergraduate dental studies, Dr. Nelson was given awards by the International College of Dentists and the American Society of Dentistry for Children. He was a charter member of the original Philharmonic Associates of Kansas City, Missouri, served as Vice-President of the Vaile Society of the Vaile-Dewitt Museum located in Independence, Missouri and Vice President and Treasurer of the Governing Board of the UMKC Alumni Association. He served as President of the Alumni Governing Board from 1995 to 1997. He was a community trustee on the University of Kansas City Trustee Board during his tenure as alumni president. He was a weeknight net manager on 3S1 for the Military Affiliated Radio System with callsign AFA3NX receiving a Certificate of Recognition from the United States Air Force Communications Command in 1990. He holds amateur radio license N0JCQ. He is a life member of the American Radio Relay Association and the International Ten-Ten Association. Dr Nelson holds a Private Pilot license and is a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He has participated in the Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration Pilot Proficiency Award Program. Professionally, he is a member of the American Dental Association, Missouri Dental Association, Greater Kansas City Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry. He served on the Board of Directors of the Greater Kansas City Dental Society from 1996 to 1998 and in 2002. He has served as an alternate-delegate and delegate to the Missouri Dental Association House of Delegates from 2001 to 2007 and was elected as a member of the GKCDS Delegation to the ADA House of Delegates for 2007 and 2008. He served as President of the Greater Kansas City Dental Society in 2005. He was made a Fellow of the American College of Dentists at the College induction held at the American Dental Association meeting at Orlando Florida in 2004 and in November of 2016, Dr Nelson was inducted as a Fellow in the International College of Dentists in Washington DC. In March of 2006 at the Midwest Dental Conference, the UMKC School of Dentistry presented Dr Nelson with the Rinehart Medallion for philanthropy and in 2010 he was presented the Rinehart Medallion for Service. Prior to his retirement, Dr. Nelson was a member of the American Society of Forensic Odontology. He also was a consultant to the insurance industry with membership in the American Association of Dental Consultants. Dr Nelson was appointed as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor on February 4th, 2004. He practiced for thirty years in a solo private practice before being appointed to a full time position as Clinical Assistant Professor at the UMKC School of Dentistry during the summer of 2012. Dr. Nelson was then promoted to Clinical Associate Professor and made Vice Chair of the Restorative Department. Upon retirement, Dr. Nelson was given “Emeritus” status by the University. Dr Nelson (Orgyen Da Zer) has been a member of the Rime Buddhist Center & Institute of Tibetan Studies since 2009. He has lead services at the Rime Center and taught classes. He served as Membership Chair from December 2010 until November 2014. He has been fortunate to study under numerous Tibetan Masters. He has received teachings on the “Womb of Buddha: The Heart Sutra” from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. He has also received Teaching and empowerments from the Venerable Phagyub Rinpoche, Lama Leena Teshe Katyup and Geshe Thupten Dorjee. He also has received teaching from Alan Wallace. His root teacher is the Venerable Younge Khachab Rinpoche VII from who he has taken Bodhisattva and Tantric vows. Khachab Rinpoche is a highly accomplished Dzogchen master and non-sectarian, or Rime scholar. He was educated at Ganden Jangtse Monastery where he received his Geshe degree. He was also appointed as the Khenpo of the Kagyu Monastery Thagten Nyingje Ling in Boudhnath where he taught for several years. He has studied widely with the top masters in the Kagyu, Nyingma, Gelug, Sakya and Bon traditions. Seventh in the line of Khachab reincarnations, he is a direct descendent of the famed terton, Yongey Mingyur Dorje, and holds the family lineage for this cycle of termas. His family has been closely associated with the Karmapas since the 17th century. Jack has a special interest in Tibet art and Tibet Medicine. He has traveled in the Mustang District of Nepal and has taught an “Images of Enlightenment” class that explores Tibetan Thangkas as artwork and practice aids. Dr Nelson was a USA Track and Field "National " certified official and has officiated at events including the 2008 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships, 2008-10 MIAA conference Championship, 2008-10 Kansas State HS Cross Country Championships, 2006-2010 KU Relays and the 2008-2010 NJCAA outdoor Track & Field Championships. Dr Nelson was also a National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) certified official. He has officiated in Track & Field and Cross Country meets in Texas, California, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas and Missouri. In Track events he was a Track Starter, and in Field Events he has served as head official for the pole vault, discus, shot put, long/triple jump, and high jump. He was a MSHSAA certified Cross Country and Track & Field official as well as USATF Level 1 Coach having completed the 2009 USA Track & Field Coaching Education School Level 1 at the University of Colorado – Boulder studying under Dr. Ralph Vernacchia, Rob Graham, Dr. Jack Ransone, Boo Schexnayder, Tommy Badon, Al Schmidt and Dr. Larry Judge. Level 1 schools cover the topics of Philosophy, Psychology, Physiology, Biomechanics, Training Theory, Biomotor Training, Sprints, Hurdles, Relays, Jumping Events, Throwing Events, Endrance Events and Racewalking events. Dr Nelson has also been a member of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The USTFCCCA is the non-profit professional organization that represents men's and women's cross country and track & field coaches in the United States. USTFCCCA serves as an advocate for cross country and track & field coaches, providing a leadership structure to assist the needs of a diverse membership, serving as a lobbyist for coaches' interests, and working as a liaison between the various stakeholders in the sports of cross country and track & field. Dr Nelson resided in Kansas City for 51 years before moving permanently to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina in 2022. Dr. Nelson volunteers with the “Meals on Wheels” program and is a member of the Yacht Club of Hilton Head. He is active with other social organizations including the Dr. George Mosse Chapter, South Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
