Eddie Cochran

Rockabilly musician (composer of "Summertime Blues" and "Twenty Flight Rock")

What is Eddie Cochran known for?

Born on October 3, 1938, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, the rock and roll pioneer Eddie Cochran left an indelible mark in the world of music. Known for his musical versatility, his most notable contributions include the rockabilly classics “Summertime Blues” and “Twenty Flight Rock.” Although his career was tragically cut short due to an unfortunate road accident in Bath, Somerset, England in 1960, Cochran's legacy lives on.

Known for his innovative use of multitrack recording, distortion techniques, and overdubbing, even on his earliest singles, Cochran managed to encapsulate the desire and frustration of adolescence in the mid-1950s and early 1960s. His suave image coupled with a rebel attitude made him the embodiment of the 1950s rocker.

Cochran's music journey started at Albert Lea High School where he played in the school band, teaching himself to play blues guitar. His breakthrough came when he performed “Twenty Flight Rock” in the film “The Girl Can't Help It,” leading to a recording contract with Liberty Records. This first major exposure led to his first record for the label, "Sittin' in the Balcony", rising to number 18 on the Billboard charts.

Despite his early demise at the tender age of 21, more of Cochran's songs were released posthumously. This further cemented his status among rock n' roll's legendary performers. In 1987, his outstanding contributions to the music industry were recognized when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His influence can still be felt today, with his songs being covered by diverse recording artists. As a testament to his lasting impact, even Paul McCartney used Cochran’s “Twenty Flight Rock” as his audition piece to impress John Lennon and secure his place in The Beatles.
