About Me | I went to NAU for my Freshman year 67-68 and dropped out because my school advisor would not let me sign up for the major I had picked--Accounting. I didn't return back to school until 1978 and graduated in 1989. I had my son, who was born with a congenital heart deformity and was told that he would never be "normal". So I returned to school to study Child Development and eventually that led to my getting my BA in Education at ASU. My son died in July 2004 and I know he was "normal" but had a difficult life because of his medical condition. I married Frank Bejarano in 1970 and worked at a bank for about 5 years and then worked as a business manager for Tolleson Elementary School District Office until my son was born and then couldn't work for about 4 years because of his illness. I began working for the Head Start program as a Home Base Teacher for Maricopa County; they actually paid for me to finish at the University. I had my daughter in 1980 while I was still teaching and going to school. I stopped working for a while again due to illness and then I went to work for Arizona State University for a new program, Project PRIME, a program to help minority jr ed and high school students be prepared to enter college. I worked with the Parents as Partners component, working to parents to become acquainted with the requirements their children needed to be ready to enter a college or University and how to be involved with their children's school activities. I left because I didn't like my boss and he felt the same way about me. I then went to work for America West Airlines on a part-time basis because by then I knew that my daughter also had mental health issues I needed to take care of. I worked for America West for 14 years; I loved working for the airline. It was a fun job and for part-time work, it was better than flipping burgers. The schedule allowed me to take my children to their medical appointments as needed. I was approached by Arizona Department of Health Services, Division of Behavioral Health Services to work for a non-profit program being started for families having children with mental health illness. Family Involvement Center was to start parent support groups and parent education about children and mental illness. So I went to work for them for 3 years until my illness forced me to retire in 2006. I've just been healing for the last 2 years. I'm really ready to return...(read more) |
