Hi Chrissie My sympathy to you and your family. When Gary was a skinny 9th grader he and I often played b-ball on the playground at St. John’s near where we lived in Abington Woods. He was happy and smiling to beat me in every game of “horse or pony”. A great competitor even then. Take care.

Your old friend Mike Whipp

Gary Lee Kochersperger of Hatboro and Abington, PA passed away January 10, 2025 at home with family, at the age of 80. He was the beloved son of the late Dorothie and Dayton Kochersperger; the devoted husband of Christine (Fite); loving father of sons Keith and Todd, wife Rebecca, granddaughters Peyton and Katelyn; younger brother of sister Lynne Elvidge and older brother of Dayton Kochersperger, wife Karen.

Gary was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi where he was a scholarship basketball athlete and later served in the US Army. After serving in the Army, Gary was invited to try out for the New York Knicks in 1969. He thrived on and off the court, and later attended Temple University where he obtained his teaching degree. Gary devoted 35 years to Upper Moreland High School where he was a respected teacher, basketball coach and athletic director. Coach “K” truly loved his students, his athletes, and the faculty he worked with. It was not uncommon for Gary to stay in touch with his former players and students long after they graduated. In his free time, Gary was heavily involved as chairperson of PIAA District 1 basketball and volleyball. This role further allowed him to keep in touch with many old and new friends. He also dedicated countless hours to Coaches vs. Cancer and was awarded the Charles Dinsmore Award in 2012 for his commitment to the fight against cancer.

As a teacher, Gary enjoyed spending summers traveling to the islands or joining his family and neighborhood beach buddies in Sea Isle City, NJ. When not at the beach, Gary kept busy with his passion for home improvement projects.

Friends and family are invited to attend his visitation on Saturday, January 25 th , 2025 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by a Celebration of Life memorial service at 11:00am. Services will be held at Abington Presbyterian Church, 1082 Old York Rd., Abington, PA 19001. Interment private burial will be held at Hillside Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the V Foundation (Gary Kochersperger Memorial) and AACR.org (American Association for Cancer
