About Those who knew Metro police officer Trevor Nettleton were struggling with his sudden loss in a botched robbery attempt where he was shot to death.

On Thursday night, at the Bolden Area Command where Nettleton was based and at all Metro stations, the flags were flying at half-staff in memory of Nettleton.

The officer's neighbors and the sheriff said this was a senseless loss.

“I've just lost another member of my organization, tragically,” said Sheriff Doug Gillespie.

The third officer death in six months has rattled the Metro Police Department to its core once again. With the death of Nettleton, Gillespie reached for words to describe the mood of his force.

“It created a deep hole which will never be filled,” Gillespie said. The sheriff boasted about the fallen officer's dedication to his work. He served Metro for the past three years and the Marines for nearly a decade. The 30-year-old officer also cared for his family, an effort his neighbors said they witnessed first-hand.

“Just the all-American dad, playing ball with his son, washing the car together,” said neighbor Keni-Lyn Wendt.

“I couldn't imagine being in the wife's place. I just couldn't bear it,” said neighbor Ursula Williams-Adedje.

A memorial outside Nettleton's home continued to grow throughout the day. His death was still unreal to some of his neighbors.

“I was shocked. I couldn't believe it. You see the person one day, and the next day they're gone,” Adedje said.

The sheriff said Nettleton protected his family and his community.

“If he wasn't acting in the capacity of a police officer out there this morning, I would like someone to convince me otherwise,” Gillespie said.

Nettleton's career also led him to the White House, serving as presidential guard under George W. Bush.

Nettleton leaves behind his wife and two small children, his toddler son and baby girl, along with his partners at Bolden Command.
