Army, 20 Years

I joined the Army right after graduation in July. I did my basic at Fort Knox and my advanced individual training at Fort Gordon Georgia. In December 1965 I left for Vietnam as a trained infantry Man. When I got to Vietnam The army had sent to many of us over at the time by several hundred. After a week in the replacement battalion they had not only not gotten us all sent out to units but managed to have us grow back to over 1000 strong. The replacement battalion commander called all of us out into the parade ground and asked a bunch of questions one of those questions Was how many of you can type. That was my training that would lead me to be the hand receipt holder, instructed and operator of the overseas autodin switch eventually at Fort Gordon some years later. I worked for 20 years in the signal field with never having any training in it other than on the job. Having all that going for me I met and married my wife at my first duty station upon returning to the United States of Fort Leavenworth Kansas. I worked at the RUFL switch there. I did a few years as a recruiter in Overland Park Kansas after my first tour In Germany with the 123 signal battalion in Wertzberg. After returning stateside for a few years I return to Germany then back to the states again and On to Korea. I return back to Georgia and the home of the signal Corps again after that and retired there 20 years and five days. I applied for and got hired on Fort Gordon to teach in the signal school and after about three years the school had a reduction in force and I was let go I got back on working at Dwight David Eisenhower medical center as the patient admin Computer System point of contact. It was CHCS put out by SAIC Corporation. I joined the implementation team and took over the creation of the patient file where all medical data both in an out patient would be hung Off of. We started with the DEERS dump of about 40,000 names and when I retired 27 years later we had 1,400,000 patients in our data file. Nobody ever came out of the data base just corrected and moved. Excuse this as I am doing it on my phone ???? keyboard.
