I entered service in 1986 joining the U.S.A.F serving in Japan, Misawa AFB and Wyoming F.E. Warren AFB in the Services Squadrons as a food service specialist.

In 1990, I transferred into the Air Force Reserves at Westover AFB, Springfield MA. There is was called to active duty for Desert Storm and Desert Shield. 1990-1991.

After I graduated college and moving to Pennsylvania, I transferred from the Air Force Reserves to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1993 M-day status. From 1993 to 1999, I was SGT/E5 in the HHC 3/109th INF and the 3/103d AR, 28th INF DIV as a cook.

In 1999, I applied for and accepted an Active Guard Reserve appointment in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. I held the positions of Personnel Sergeant, SSG/E6 1999-2003; Operations Sergeant, SFC/E7 2003-2013 and Detachment Sergeant, E/7 2013-2016. I performed the duties of the Casualty Assistant Officer/Notification Officer three times during my service. After 9/11, I assisted in the deployment of all three units I supported for Operation Iraqi Freedom Operation Enduring Freedom and others starting in 2003. As an AGR member, I had many additional duties and assignment no typical in an active duty.

After 30 years of service to our country, I retired from active duty service in 2016. A Soldier for Life.

Darren tragically passed away last year on April 16th, 2007. He was jusrt 43.
He left behind his bst friend and sister Cindy, SHS class of 1978 as well as his neice Elizabeth 7 nephew and godson Nicholas. Donations can be made to the Darren Cavallaro memorial -Nicholas Kohler Fund c/o Eastern Bank 405 Paradise Rd. Swampscott MA 01907. Autism has taken Nicholas aswell as Juvenile Diabetes. All monies go towards Darren biggest wish...for Nicholas' care and his future.

1949 Carribean Manuevers Vieques Island P.R.on the APA USS Okaloosa. Crossed the Atlantic on LST 908 to the Mediterranean our mission was to evacuate American nationals if necessary Boarded different Destroyers USS Roan, Sibling, and Meredith and the Carrier USS Coral Sea.
1950 Company B 6th Marines on Cruiser
USS Roanoke Mediterranean again same purpose but went to and back thru the Suez Canal to Jidda Arabia. Korean War broke out I was on an advanced detail to cross country on a 66 car frieght train to Camp Pendleton. H Company 3rd Battalion 1st Marines 1st Marine Division was activated.and we sailed to Japan on the USNS Simon B. Buckner. From Japan we boarded an
LSTand landedat Inchon in LVT's against and over the sea wall on September 15, 1950. Wounded By shrapnel 3 days later. Spent 2 days in the Field hospital and returned to duty. On September 27 we entered Seoul and recoverd it from the North Koreans.
We boarded the LST and landed in Wonsan North Korea and we entered the Chosin Reservoir Campaign October 26 and ended December 15 when we boarded ship to Masan Korea. From there in 1951 we engaged in Operation Killer and Ripper and on March 22 I was wounded and on the USS Repose Hospital ship until May 1, 1951
I was sent home and after a 30 day leave I was assigned to Quantico Rifle Range\. I married Carol O'Brien in December and as a StaffSergeant I was discharged on April 16, 1952.
I was awarded
the Purple Heart Medal w/Gold Star, the Navy & Marine Corps Medal w/"V", Combat Action Ribbon, Preidential Unit Citation w/star, Marine Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean War Sevice Medal w/3 stars, ROK Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal Korea, the ROK War Service Medal.
Went back to work at GE Lynn and took evening courses at MIT and courses at GE I had numerous jobs but the last 25 years I worked in the Development Laboratory as an Expert on Jet Engine Lubrication and Heat Transfer. Carol and I raised 8 children in Swampscott, they all graduated from Swampscott High School we lived in the same house on Sheridan Terrace for 42 years. Because of health reasons we had to move to Peabody in 2001and I miss Swampscott..
