Class of 1963
Army, 3 Years
William DeBruce “Bill” Cody entered the US Army on July 12, 1966, and he graduated from Infantry Officer Candidate School (OCS) on December 13, 1967 at Fort Benning, GA where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant (2LT). 2LT Cody reported to Fort Carson, Colorado on January 3, 1968 and was assigned as a platoon leader in Company B, 1st Battalion of the 11th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized) where he trained with is unit. The 5th Division's 1st Brigade deployed as a unit to Vietnam in July 1968. They were located in the Quang Tri Province which was the northern most province in Vietnam where they operated as a Separate Brigade under the operational control of the 3d Marine Landing Force. In late March 1969, Company B with other elements of the Brigade and units of the US Marine Corps and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) were deployed in Operation Montana Mauler where a North Vietnam unit held a strategic hill that allowed them to secure an infiltration route of an NVA regiment. On March 27th, 1969, then 1LT Cody was killed in this action on while capturing that hill. For his actions, 1LT William D. Cody was awarded for Distinguished Service Cross (DSC). The DSC is awarded only for valor in combat and is second only to the Medal of Honor in US Army awards for valor. To the best of our knowledge, this makes Bill the most highly decorated Robinson High School graduate in the Vietnam War.
