Carl was from the oilfield town of Odessa, Texas, in far West Texas near New Mexico. Carl was a 1959 graduate of Odessa High School. He worked in the oil fields after high school and then joined the U.S. Navy in 1962. He had decided to make a career in the Navy and was in his second enlistment at the time of his death. He had reported to Cubi Point Naval Air Station at Subic Bay in the Philippines for transportation to his ship, the USS Constellation, which was serving in the waters off North Vietnam. On October 2, 1969, he and 25 other personnel were on a C-2A Greyhound cargo aircraft that went down for unknown reasons and all 26 personnel were lost. Carl is remembered by his community and by the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial located at Midland International Airport, Midland, Texas.

The photograph is taken from his high school annual (1958-59).

Navy, 14 Years

Hospital Corpsman Second Class Petty Officer (Air Warfare), served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1997. Attended HM "A" School in San Diego, Respiratory Therapy Technician "C" School at Brooke Army Medical Center in 1984. Stationed at Naval Hospital, San Diego, California from 1984 to 1989. Assigned to the Respiratory Therapy Department. Assigned to Surgical Team One of the Mobile Medical Augmentation Readiness Team for deployment within 48 hours notice to anywhere in the world. As a member of the team, I deployed to Western Pacific inchopped to Seventh Fleet onboard USS Okinawa (LPH 3) with BLT 1/9 from Camp Pendleton in 1985. Port visits in Subic Bay, Philippine Islands (PI), Fremantle, Western Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong (my personal favorite!) I also became a Trusty Shellback after Crossing the Equator. After returning from that deployment, I contracted a rare neurological disease called Guillain-Barre Syndrome, problem from exposure to something on deployment. The gist was that I was paralyzed from the neck down after returning from deployment and spent about a year learning to walk again. In 1987, I was mobile enough to go back on ST One for another West-Pac, this time onboard USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3). We first went to the Bering Sea to participate in some ops at Shemya Island near Russia. We evaded Soviet flyovers and submarines during the op, but were caught up with during our transit to Subic. After we were discovered, I was able to get my first involvement with the Naval Intelligence community as a member of the "Snoopy Team" on which we photographed all Soviet aircraft flying over. The first was a TU 95M "Bear" bomber that I got some great shots of being escorted by our AV8B Harriers. We also caught a TU-16 "Badger" strategic bomber on film. We also visited Pattaya Beach, Thailand, Okinawa, Japan, and participated in Operation Team Spirit in Pohang, Korea. The team flew home after four months from Manila back to San Diego. Later that year, the team was deployed clandestinely to the Persian Gulf. We embarked onboard USS Guadalcanal (LPH 7). Our first involvement was with four surviving members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard members. I had the duty of overseeing their care in our sick bay. I was the Leading Petty Officer (LPO) for the team (the Navy's version of NCOIC). We had a hand in several operations while there. We were able to return home about two weeks before Christmas, 1987. After that, I was able to be relieved from the team as I had been on for double the normal tour - 36 months, instead of 18. I was then able to go back to my normal job at Naval Hospital, San Diego (Balboa) with the occasional patient air transport flying out of Miramar Naval Air Station (NAS) as a member of aircrew. In 1989, I transferred to Naval Hospital, Corpus Christi onboard NAS Corpus. While there, I instructed physicians, nurses, EMTs and Paramedics in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and cardiopulmonary medicine. I took on a role in Naval Intelligence as an Intelligence Specialist onboard NAS Corpus and NAS Kingsville. I also earned my BS degree in Sociology and began my graduate program in International Relations. I left the Navy in 1997 after 14 years of honorable service.
