Class of 1984
Navy, 4 Years
Was a Boatswain's Mate on the USS Coral Sea CV-43. Life on an aircraft carrier was interesting. Was stationed out of Norfolk, VA. Duane Ties and I briefly lived together while he was stationed at Port Services, at Norfolk. Jim Manley joined the Army, the same day I joined the Navy, and after his 3 years in Germany, he was stationed out of Williamsburg, VA, just up the road from Norfolk so we spent almost a year together out there. The work load was never ending, and my ship was haze gray and underway all the time....but I wouldn't exchange the experience for anything in the world.

Army, 4 Years
Fought the "battle of the 14th St. bridge" in Washington. I crossed the bridge the airplane hit in Jan '82, 4 times a day. God was with me! We went home after lunch that afternoon. The crash happened about 4:00. They couldn't handle a little snow, Army or no. Also, the same day sub way crash killed 5 people.
Drove a van for a courier in the Washington area. We were taxi drivers in uniform. We shuffled people who shuffled papers. Do you know the pentagon heats their bldg with classified papers they burn.
I occasionally drove Generals 'cause I had a top-secret clearance, kinda like naive, goody-two-shoes Radar O'Reiley who was also from Iowa.
It was a great experience but I got tired of wearing a uniform every day, I wanted to wear civies occasionally. O.D. Green isn't my favorite color. I even got away with wearing dress greens rather than fatiques every day like I was supposed to because my job title was "truck driver" which means you wear fatiques. I got away with a lot of stuff just because I was older than the average private, I was 33 when I enlisted! And, I didn't get into any trouble. At the end of the day I went home to my apt off base and minded my business. I also had a sweetheart for a boss that last year and a half when I became the courier driver. I did my job over and above, and he acknowledged it by giving me a break now and then. He was an E-6 with less than 2 years to go 'til retirement, so he wasn't trying to impress anybody or make another promotion. My green-beret husband thinks we were in two different Army's when I tell him all the stuff that we got away with on that post. Even in basic training, especially near the end, we got away with a lot of stuff that he never heard of when he was in the Army in the early 60's. 27 months in Nam.
